Lipid droplets
In specialized lipid storage cells (adipocytes), a single, large droplet nearly fills the entire cell, with only a thin rim of cytoplasm around it. This image shows a small accumulation of adipocytes in loose connective tissue. The tissue has been fixed with osmium tetroxide, which preserves the large lipid droplet in the cytoplasm and provides the brown-black staining of the lipid. The lipid in these vesicles consists of triglycerides and cholesterol esters. Toluidine blue stain. 1000x
