Fibrocartilage
This higher magnification image shows a region of fibrocartilage adjacent to bone. Numerous chondrocytes are visible surrounded by pale-staining matrix and horizontally-oriented collagen fibers. The anatomical basis is for the basophilic staining in the center of the image is unclear. 1000x
Tendon >
In the dense regular connective tissue composing the tendon, fibroblasts are inactive with flattened, heterochromatic nuclei (black arrows). The extracellular matrix consists almost exclusively of regularly arranged collagen bundles with little ground substance.
Fibrocartilage >
Collagen fibers continue uninterrupted into and through the fibrocartilage. The chondrocytes in their lacunae are spherical, surrounded by the firm, rubbery ground substance. The ground substance stains pale blue.

Collagen fibers continue uninterrupted into the bone, anchoring the tendon.
