Stratum basale: melanocytes

Pale-staining melanocytes contain melanosomes distributed throughout the cell. Melanosomes, containing the pigment melanin, are transferred into the neighboring keratinocytes. Tonofibrils, composed of keratin intermediate filaments (tonofilaments), can be seen in the keratinocytes of stratum basale. 15,000x
