Stratum spinosum

Stratum spinosum contains 3-10 layers of polygonal keratinocytes with euchromatic nuclei. These cells possess prominent bundles of intermediate filaments (tonofibrils) containing keratin tonofilaments. Adjacent keratinocytes are attached by numerous desmosomes, creating the spiny appearance around their periphery. 200x, 2000x
