Esophagus

A trichrome stain of the mucosa and submucosa of the esophagus emphasizes the different tissues present.  In this region the muscularis mucosae is incomplete, consisting of islands of smooth muscle, rather than a continuous layer.  The longitudinal fold, with a core of submucosa, would flatten during expansion of the esophagus during food transport.  40x
