Esophagus

A thick stratified squamous nonkeratinized epithelium lines the esophagus. The lamina propria underlying the epithelium possesses lymphoid structures and localized mucous glands (not shown here) in the lower third and sometimes in the upper third. The muscularis mucosae is usually absent in the upper third. Additional tubulo-acinar glands, esophageal glands proper, are located in the submucosa. 100x
