Purkinje fibers
Purkinje fibers are modified cardiac muscle cells. They are larger than ventricular muscle cells and they have one or two round nuclei. Additionally, myofibrils are sparse and restricted to the periphery of the cells. The cytoplasm is rich in mitochondria and glycogen; the glycogen-rich center portion of the cell stains palely with hematoxylin and eosin. After traveling in the subendocardium, Purkinje fibers penetrate the ventricular myocardium to innervate cardiac muscle fibers. 1000x
