Lipid droplets
This electron micrograph shows a cell whose cytoplasm contains numerous lipid droplets. The lipid droplets are not surrounded by membranes, and often these droplets will coalesce into larger droplets. The appearance of a membrane surrounding the droplet results from the presence of cytoskeletal elements at the periphery of the lipid. 6000x
