Closely spaced myofibrils almost totally fill the cytoplasm of skeletal muscle fibers, and thus are not normally visible individually. A region of artifactual separation in the upper fiber reveals individual myofibrils as well as the banding pattern present in each. In other regions of the section, the myofibrils remain tightly compacted and their alignment results in the banding seen across the entire muscle fiber. 1000x
