Rough endoplasmic reticulum
This electron micrograph shows a cell with extensive RER, indicating that it is actively synthesizing protein (translation) for secretion. At the light microscopic level, these regions of RER stain blue with hematoxylin. Also visible are mitochondria, lipid droplets, glycogen granules and a portion of the nucleus. Liver, 8000x
RER >
RER consists of a system of interconnected, flattened, membranous sacs or cisterns which have ribosomes on their outer (cytoplasmic) surfaces. In this image, RER fills most of the cytoplasm. Secretory proteins synthesized by ribosomes enter the lumen of the cistern and are transported to the Golgi.
