Schwann cells

Neurons are maintained structurally and metabolically by a variety of support cells, termed glial cells. One variety of glial cells is the satellite Schwann cell, which surround neuronal cell bodies in ganglia in the peripheral nervous system. In this dorsal root ganglion, numerous satellite Schwann cells form a capsule-like enclosure around the cell bodies of individual pseudounipolar neurons, controlling the microenvironment of these cells. Satellite Schwann cells also surround multipolar neurons in autonomic ganglia. 750x
