Schwann cells

Neurons are maintained structurally and metabolically by a variety of support cells, termed glial cells. One variety of glial cells is the satellite Schwann cell; these cells surround neuronal cell bodies in ganglia in the peripheral nervous system.  In this dorsal root ganglion, numerous satellite Schwann cells form a capsule-like enclosure around individual pseudounipolar neurons, controlling the microenvironment of these cells.  Satellite Schwann cells also surround multipolar neurons in autonomic ganglia.  750x
