Supporting cells

Nervous tissue contains a variety of cells, called glial cells, which function to support, nourish and insulate neurons.  In the peripheral nervous system, these cells are Schwann cells; in the central nervous system, these cells are astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, ependymal cells, and microglia.  1500x, 1500x, 1500x

Schwann cells > <p>Schwann cells are the supporting cells in the peripheral nervous system and consist of ensheathing and satellite types.  Ensheathing Schwann cells (seen here) either form a myelin sheath around individual axons or surround groups of smaller unmyelinated axons.  The second type, satellite Schwann cells, form a capsule-like structure around neurons in ganglia. </p>
