Stratified squamous, keratinized epithelium

This epithelium forms the outer layer of the skin, which covers the exterior, or dry, surface of the body that is exposed to the external environment.  The basal portion is composed of viable cells, while the outer layers are composed of dead cells made up almost entirely of the protein, keratin.  Keratin provides protection against abrasion.  100x
