Stratified squamous, nonkeratinized epithelium

This epithelium covers internal body surfaces which are exposed to some degree of physical trauma or abrasion.  This epithelium has a basal layer of cuboidal cells that are mitotically active.  Above them are several layers of polygonal cells that become progressively more flattened, until they become squamous at the luminal surface.  Vagina  400x
