Elastic and collagen fibers

Elastic and collagen fibers are shown in this electron micrograph of dense irregular connective tissue. Both fiber types are produced by fibroblasts. Elastic fibers, which appear amorphous and more darkly stained than collagen fibers, consist of a dense core of elastin protein surrounded by a network of microfibrils. Collagen fibers consist of bundles of individual collagen fibrils. 5000x
