Bone remodeling

Bone remodeling during growth is an intricate process involving both bone deposition and bone resorption. During growth in length, the correct proportion of diaphysis to epiphyses must be maintained. Simultaneously, a bone must also increase in diameter as it supports the increased body mass associated with increased height. These two sketches illustrate changes occurring to a long bone during growth in length. The yellow bone is the original size of the bone, and the red bone is the same bone after a period of growth.
