Bone classification

Bone tissue is classified based on two features: (1) its macroscopic appearance, i.e., how it appears to the naked eye, as either compact (cortical) or spongy (cancellous) and (2) its stage of maturation as either woven (immature) or lamellar (mature). A complete classification of bone tissue includes one term from each set, e.g., compact, woven bone or spongy, lamellar bone. 400x (all)

Woven bone > <p>The matrix of woven bone is not organized into lamellae, osteocyte lacunae are numerous and rounded, and the matrix often stains faintly bluish. All bone is initially deposited as woven bone.</p>

Lamellar bone > <p>The matrix of lamellar bone is organized into lamellae that can either be arranged as concentric layers forming osteons, or as flattened plates on the internal and external surfaces of a bone. Woven bone is gradually remodeled into lamellar bone. </p>
