Cortex: juxtaglomerular apparatus
The convoluted regions of the cortex contain renal corpuscles, proximal and distal convoluted tubules, terminal ends of the ascending thick limbs, and connective tubules. A specialization of the ascending thick limb (distal straight tubule) and the adjacent afferent arteriole is called the juxtaglomerular apparatus, which regulates blood pressure and volume by activating the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. 10x, 200x

Juxtaglomerular apparatus >
The juxtaglomerular apparatus, located at the vascular pole of the renal corpuscle, is composed of the macula densa of the distal convoluted tubule and the juxtaglomerular cells of the afferent arteriole. The macula densa, a region of tightly packed cells in the distal convoluted tubule, lies adjacent to the juxtaglomerular cells (modified smooth muscle) of the afferent arteriole.
