Tongue: Musculature

Motility of the tongue is controlled by extrinsic and intrinsic skeletal muscles.  The intrinsic muscles, seen here, originate within and insert into the tongue.  Muscle fibers are arranged in criss-crossing fascicles and their actions change the shape of the tongue.  Extrinsic muscles originate outside the tongue and serve to move the tongue in and out of the mouth. 400x
