In this preparation, the connective tissue of the tunica adventitia appears artifactually dispersed as a result of removing the organ for histological preparation. Numerous small arteries and veins are present in this layer which supply the thick tunica adventitia. These vessels are are collectively referred to as the vasa vasorum.
