Secretory granules

The staining properties of secretory granules depend on their contents. These secretory cells in a salivary gland contain basophilic secretory granules, indicating that their contents are negatively charged. Like the pancreas, these are enzyme-containing zymogen granules that will fuse with the plasma membrane, releasing their contents by exocytosis into the lumen of the acinus. Also visible are portions of the duct system that drains the gland. Submandibular gland, 1000x
