Mitochondria

Mitochondria are composed of two unit membranes, the inner one of which is folded to form cristae that extend into the interior matrix. Located along these cristal membranes are the enzymes in the electron transport chain which generate ATP. The dramatic infolding of the inner membrane greatly increases the surface area available for ATP production. The interior of the mitochondrion is occupied by a gel-like matrix containing the enzymes necessary for the citric acid cycle (Krebs cycle) and fatty acid oxidation.
