Lipid droplets

Lipid is stored in cells as droplets which are not surrounded by a unit membrane. The lipid, consisting of triglycerides and cholesterol esters, provides energy for cell metabolism and may be present as multiple droplets (shown here) or as a single, large droplet, such as seen in an adipocyte.
