Smooth endoplasmic reticulum

Smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER) is continuous with the RER but is arranged as sacs and tubules that lack ribosomes.  SER is the major site of lipid and cholesterol synthesis and thus is well developed in this steroid hormone-secreting cell.  Another feature of steroid-producing cells are mitochondria with tubular cristae.  The SER also functions in detoxification of drugs and pesticides and plays a role in calcium storage and release.
