Sebaceous gland
These images show a hair follicle with its associated sebaceous gland, collectively referred to as a pilosebaceous unit. Sebaceous glands are normally associated with hair follicles and their secretory product, called sebum, is released onto the hair shaft in follicle. 100x, 400x

-- Papilla >
The base of the bulb is invaginated by the dermal papilla consisting of a tuft of vascularized loose connective tissue that maintains the follicle.
-- Follicle sheath >
The follicle sheath is a multilayered sleeve that surrounds the hair shaft.

- Arrector pili muscle
The arrector pili muscle is band of smooth muscle anchored at one end in the papillary layer of the dermis and attached to the hair follicle at the other, in a specialized stem-cell niche called the follicular bulge. Contraction of the arrector pili elevates the hair shaft and produces depressions on the skin surface called “goose flesh”.
