Venule

This image shows a larger venule cut in longitudinal section. Venules are composed of an endothelium and a thin subendothelial layer. No additional tunics are present. Venules resemble capillaries but have wider lumens. They are a major site of fluid extravasation as well as migration of blood cells into the surrounding connective tissue (diapedesis). Also visible are capillaries and a small arteriole. Surrounding the vessels is loose connective tissue with elastic fibers cut in cross section. 1000x
