Islets of Langerhans are clusters of peptide-producing cells scattered throughout the exocrine pancreas. With a special stain (on right), two subclasses of islet cells can be identified. Glucagon is produced by alpha cells (red cells) and insulin, by beta cells (blue cells). Delta cells, secreting somatostatin, cannot be identified here. 400x, 1000x
