Individual endocrine cells
Enteroendocrine cells are members of the diffuse neuroendocrine system (DNES) of cells. They are located at the bases of gastric and intestinal glands, where they intercalate with the exocrine gland cells. The secretory granules of DNES cells are mostly directed away from the lumen of the gland, i.e.,toward the basement membrane surrounding the gland and toward the capillaries which transport their secretions. 1000x.

Chief cells, the source of digestive enzymes in the stomach, are exocrine gland cells. Their secretory granules are oriented toward the lumen of the gland by which they gain access to stomach contents.
