Stratified squamous, nonkeratinized (moist) epithelium

The lining of the vagina is another example of a stratified squamous moist epithelium providing protection against abrasion for an internal body surface. This epithelium has a basal layer of cuboidal cells that are mitotically active. Above them are several layers of polygonal cells that become progressively more flattened, until they become squamous at the luminal surface. Vagina, 400x
