Bone: the organ - spongy bone
Spongy bone is seen in a dried preparation (left and above right) and in a histological preparation of decalcified bone (below right). Spongy (cancellous) bone, located in the interior of bones, is present in the epiphyses and metaphyses as well as forming a thin lining around the interior of compact bone in the diaphysis. To the naked eye, spongy bone looks like a sponge, consisting of a network of bony spicules or trabeculae, enclosing small spaces containing red marrow. 1x (left), 10x (top right), 100x (bottom right).
