Supporting cells
Nervous tissue contains a variety of cells, called glial cells, which function to support, nourish and insulate neurons. In the peripheral nervous system, these cells are Schwann cells; in the central nervous system, these cells are astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, ependymal cells, and microglia. 1500x, 1500x, 1500x
Schwann cells >
Schwann cells are the supporting cells in the peripheral nervous system and consist of ensheathing and satellite types. Ensheathing Schwann cells (seen here) either form a myelin sheath around individual axons or surround groups of smaller unmyelinated axons. The second type, satellite Schwann cells, form a capsule-like structure around neurons in ganglia.
Astrocytes >
Astrocytes are the major supportive cell in the central nervous system. These cells have multiple functions, including physical support, metabolic and ionic homeostasis, and protection. Astrocytes in grey matter are called protoplasmic astrocytes, while those located in white matter are called fibrous astrocytes.
Oligodendrocytes >
Like Schwann cells, oligodendrocytes consist of two types, interfascicular and satellite. Interfascicular oligodendrocytes produce the myelin sheath in the central nervous system. Satellite oligodendrocytes are located in the grey matter adjacent to neuronal cell bodies. Their function is unclear.
Myelin sheath
Like Schwann cells, oligodendrocytes consist of two types, interfascicular and satellite. Interfascicular oligodendrocytes produce the myelin sheath in the central nervous system. Satellite oligodendrocytes are located in the grey matter adjacent to neuronal cell bodies. Their function is unclear.
Axons
Like Schwann cells, oligodendrocytes consist of two types, interfascicular and satellite. Interfascicular oligodendrocytes produce the myelin sheath in the central nervous system. Satellite oligodendrocytes are located in the grey matter adjacent to neuronal cell bodies. Their function is unclear.
Multipolar neuron
Like Schwann cells, oligodendrocytes consist of two types, interfascicular and satellite. Interfascicular oligodendrocytes produce the myelin sheath in the central nervous system. Satellite oligodendrocytes are located in the grey matter adjacent to neuronal cell bodies. Their function is unclear.
