Endochondral ossification
Endochondral ossification begins in a hyaline cartilage model of the future bone. Cartilage located in the center of the cartilage model undergoes a series of regressive, degenerative changes, forming a framework on which bone can be deposited. Because bone is deposited on a cartilage framework, this bone formation is called endochondral ossification. In addition, a sleeve of bone, the periosteal band, is deposited by intramembranous ossification around the central cartilage shaft by the original periochondrium that differentiates into a periosteum.
