Endochondral ossification begins in a hyaline cartilage template of the future bone. Cartilage located in the center of the cartilage template undergoes a series of degenerative changes, forming a framework on which bone can be deposited. This bone is deposited on and replaces where cartilage has been located; therefore, this deposition is termed endochondral ossification. Additionally, a sleeve of bone, the periosteal band, is deposited by intramembranous ossification around the central cartilage shaft by the original periochondrium-turned-periosteum. Animal limb 10x
