Dense irregular connective tissue

These images compare dense irregular connective tissue stained to reveal elastic fibers. On the left, the Verhoeff method stains elastic fibers black and collagen fibers red. The image on the right shows similar tissue stained by the Movat pentachrome method, which includes the Verhoeff method as one of its five stains. Collagen fibers are stained yellow. The Verhoeff method targets the protein elastin, the major component of elastic fibers.  Elastic fibers are present in all types of connective tissue proper to provide a certain degree of stretchability. 400x
