Elastic and collagen fibers

These images of dense irregular connective tissue in the skin compare the appearance of elastic fibers stained with hematoxylin and eosin with that using a special elastin stain. Elastic fibers are eosinophilic and in some sections, as shown here, can be distinguished from collagen fibers with eosin alone. In most cases however, a special elastin stain, the Verhoeff method, is required and is shown in the right panel.  The Verhoeff method stains elastic fibers black and collagen fibers red.  400x, 400x
