Medulla
The ascending thick tubule is lined with simple cuboidal epithelium whose nuclei are irregularly arranged around the lumen. The collecting duct is lined by simple columnar epithelial cells, called principle cells, with very pale cytoplasm and distinct lateral cell boundaries. Interspersed with these pale principle cells are darker intercalated cells, which often bulge into the lumen. 400x

Thin limbs >
Thin limbs are lined by a simple squamous epithelium with nuclei that bulge into the lumen. The vasa recta comprise a complex system of capillaries that run parallel to the tubules and represent the vascular component of the countercurrent exchange system that regulates the concentration of the urine.
