Cortex: juxtaglomerular apparatus

The juxtaglomerular apparatus has two components.  Juxtaglomerular cells are modified smooth muscle cells in the wall of the afferent arteriole at the vascular pole of the renal corpuscle.  The macula densa, in the wall of the adjacent ascending thick limb (distal straight tubule), is composed of numerous, compacted cells.  The juxtaglomerular apparatus regulates blood pressure and volume.  1000x
